Pearl Harbor

???????????????????????????????Oh my, every American citizen should visit Pearl Harbor. It was the most sobering experience I’ve ever had. I was a little girl about 5 years old when this devastating day occurred and thrust us into World War II so I don’t remember it at the time. I do remember World War II though as a child. My Uncle Richard lost both of his legs in active duty in Europe.

????????????????????We were at Pearl Harbor for a day and still didn’t see it all. The first thing that happens when a person arrives is to watch a movie showing the attack on Pearl Harbor. That put us in a sobering mood right away. Then we took a ferry out to the USS Arizona Memorial.

????????????????This is built over top of the battleship. It doesn’t touch the ship but it’s built over it.

???????????????????????????????This is a picture that shows how it’s located over the sunken ship.

There are parts of the ship above water.  It’s very sobering to look at these and                           realize                                                                this was a battleship.

There are bodies of over 900 men still down in the ship. That’s a very sobering fact.

The names of the men are all on this wall.

???????????????????????????????This was a very sobering day. But still I’m so glad we got to go to experience this.

From the                 USS                                                                                                                                                                             Arizona                                                                                                                                        Memorial we could see the battleship USS Missouri, which was also damaged in the attach. It didn’t sink and was later repaired and used again in battle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe went on a tour of the USS Missouri. Wow!

That was quite an eye opener! We have no idea what our service men and women go OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAthrough to serve our country.

It was on this ship that the peace treaty of World War II was signed! General MacArthur and Hiromoto.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe battleship USS Missouri was still being used in later battles. Here’s a plaque telling of its use in Desert Storm!

???????????????????????????????We also toured a submarine. This was very interesting. How those men survived living in such tight quarters is beyond me! OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Jerry and me in the first picture here and Pam in the second.

We have ear phones to listen to a guide telling us of everything we saw. It made it so much more understandable. Everything was labeled with a number, we just pushed the number on our little box and the explanation would start. There were such tight quarters on the submarine we could hardly get through some places! It was all very interesting.

We’ll so glad we took a day to visit Pearl Harbor and highly recommend it to anyone going to Hawaii.
