Our first house was a small beginner house. I loved it.
It was built by Jerry with the help of brothers, Jim and Bob, brother-in-law, Roger, and a few others, myself included.
Jerry began building in April so the walls were up and the roof boards were on when we got married in June and went on our honeymoon.
We lived in a small trailer house beside the garage while we finished the house. The two car garage was already on the land when Jerry bought it.
We had such a fun honeymoon going to all the New England states but of course we were anxious to get back to building our house. I helped with what I could but I had gotten pregnant on our honeymoon and was sick a lot for about three months.
Jerry was a meat and potatoes man so I cooked a good supper for him every day and had it ready when he came home from work. About the time I was making gravy I got sick and had to make a run for it. Oh dear. I remember thinking, oh, what have I done to myself? I’ll never feel normal again! But thank goodness, the sickness didn’t last.
Jerry was very particular about building. Everything had to be perfect. I decided to help out one day while he was at work. I climbed the ladder to the roof and added some shingles to the rows already done. When he came home he became upset! Someone had left the rows of shingles uneven! He named the person he thought must have done it and was surprised he hadn’t noticed it when they quit working the evening before. I waited in shame for about 10 minutes and then couldn’t stand it any longer. I confessed to him that I was the guilty one! He couldn’t believe it! He hugged me and said it was alright. I hadn’t done any harm. He was able to continue on and make it come out right.
Our family increased. Meet Pamela Gail! She was and is so beautiful!
Then Theodore Gerald was added to the family.
Jerry and Teddy mowing the lawn on Jerry’s new rider.
Then Timothy Lee joined the family!
Here I am with my three beautiful children! Teddy, Timmy and Pammy! We had a house full!
The stairway to the basement was beside the kitchen. As our family grew we needed more room in the kitchen for eating. Jerry decided to move the stairway! He built a screened in patio out the back door and beside the garage. Then he actually moved the stairway to go down from the patio! It worked! We had a much bigger kitchen with a window looking out over the driveway!
Jerry relaxing in our new patio! He deserved it!
What a man I married!

Man, I would never have the courage to get on a roof and lay down shingles. Very impressed that you gave it a shot, even if it didn’t work out as planned. I wish I was more handy. My beginner home takes a lot more work than I thought it would.

It took courage but it was also pretty stupid of me. I don’t think we knew yet that I was pregnant! Oh, to be young again!
