Travel Log # 4 Paraguay 1989

I walked under this sign so when I saw what it said, I had someone take my picture! Yup, that’s me: Tia Anita! If you speak Spanish you know it means Aunt Anita.

Paraguay is in the middle of South America. It borders between Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia.  It’s a great place to visit but it’s kind of looked down upon by the other SA countries…so unfair.

Picture 2 is of Jerry and me at the Falls de Iguazu. The most beautiful falls we’ve ever seen! There are more pictures of the falls at the end of this post. Once again my pictures didn’t stay in the order I put them in! 😦

Pictures 3 & 4 are of the capitol city of Asuncion. This is where part of our family was living and working.

Picture 5 is looking down on the slum district.

Picture 6 is of Ted beside the Land Rover he drove while they lived there. Traffic is terrific! Ted is a good driver and managed to navigate very well. Here’s one example: stop signs and traffic lights are only suggestions!

Picture 7 is the mission house where we stayed for part of our time there.

Our trip to Paraguay was a delightful, unexpected journey for me. I just never expected to go to South America! If I did ever go I probably would have gone to Brazil or Colombia. But here again as with Malaysia, our son, Ted, and daughter-in-law moved to Paraguay! We wanted and needed to see where they were living! I couldn’t picture them is my mind because of my ignorance of Paraguay! They were there for two years and then my parents went down for six months! So we joined a group that was going as a work team. It was a good fit.

Picture 8 The school where they taught.

Picture 9 Inside the school courtyard. Denise taught elementary school. Ted taught high school classes and was over-taking the care of the buildings and grounds. He had a crew under him. Ted learned to speak the Guarani language which is what the Guarani Indians spoke. My dad taught a high school class of journalism and my mother was librarian.

Picture 10 I kept hearing a parrot! I finally went for a walk and found this parrot in a back yard!

Picture 11 These men made a typical scene for me to capture. Afternoons were so scorching hot that everyone took two hours to do nothing. Even stores were closed during this time. These men gathered for a time of relaxing and drinking tea. It was a very very strong tea.

Picture 12. A man drawing water from a well.

Picture 13. Inside a neighborhood store.

Picture 14. Inside another neighborhood store.

Picture 15. Downtown at a meat market!

Picture 16. Downtown on a street among shoppers.

Picture 17. A Guarani Indian woman selling her wares. I bought from her!

Picture 18. Dawn over Paraguay. This sunrise picture I took from our airplane.

Picture19 is the city of Asuncion taken from our plane. We landed at 5:00 AM.

Pictures 20 & 21 are of the beautiful Falls de Iguazu! These falls border Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. They are the most beautiful falls I’ve ever seen!

  6. Lovely to see a post on Paraguay. I was visiting your blog to read another post when the Paraguay link at the top of you page caught my eye. I went to Paraguay for a year to live with a Paraguayan host family when I was 16 (2007), and I fell in love with the country. I went back last August for the first time, and I know I will be back many more times! Glad to see you enjoyed yourselves there, Paraguay needs more good reviews like this one!
