Wonder

This is love...

Last spring when I went to visit my mother I saw a man come day after day to play his guitar and sing to his wife. I finally got up enough nerve to ask him about them. She, an attractive woman in her early 60’s, was suffering with Alzheimer’s. I took their picture. Early the next morning, 4:00 AM, I woke up and couldn’t get them off my mind. I got up and wrote their story inserting the picture of them.

Later I made copies and gave one to the man. The next day he told me he made copies and gave one to each of their children!

I have just returned from Colorado visiting my mom in the same nursing home. I missed seeing the man with his guitar and his wife so I asked about them one day. Oh no. Shortly after I wrote their story and returned home to Michigan she took a turn for the worse…and died.

What…Why did I meet them…why did I write their story…I’m filled with wonder…

I watched as he began playing his guitar and singing. She was staring straight ahead. Then slowly, a smile formed on her lips. She looked at him and he at her. I felt it was a private moment but I couldn’t help but watch. Her smile was so sweet. He sang song after song.

Finally the private concert ended and she was taken back to her room. He put his guitar away. I mustered up some courage as I walked slowly to him. “Sh really loved your singing. Her smile was so sweet!”

“Yes, she used to be a professional singer!” he said so proudly. “We also sang together at weddings, funerals, churches! We were always singing!”

“She’s your wife?” I asked

“Yes, she’s my girl! When our children came home for weekends we’d spend all Saturday evenings singing together as a family! It’s a wonderful memory.”

“What happened?” I boldly blurted out.

Alzheimer’s,” he said sadly. “About nine years ago. She’s only sixty-three.”

I’ll never forget the love I saw in his eyes as he looked at her while singing to her. They were fun songs and she was brought back to recognition as she watched and listened to him. Some of her smiles were almost sweet laughter!

I thanked him for sharing with me. “May God bless you, Gary.”

Lord, for whatever reason, thank You for giving me this privilege of seeing true love demonstrated so sweetly. Thank You for the privilege of writing their story. Please be with Gary today. Be his comfort.

Anita, this is such a sweet story. I’d like to see the picture of them. I’m wondering if they knew the Lord. It seems like a story of love for sure, and how love covers it all, wins out and then there is just something about music. Remember David and the harp? I think it is a part of love, and friendship coming straight from the heart of God. Some music lacks the love and peace, fruits of the spirit, so then it is no longer a message from God’s heart but from evil and darkness. Just thoughts from my heart.

I hope they were believers. He said they sang in churches. I feel very blessed to have been a very small, insignificant part of their lives…I wonder why. If I can find the picture I’ll put it on.

Thanks for your comment, Kathy. No I haven’t read “Still Alice”, I’ll have to look for it. This was my first close up contact with Alzheimer’s, I had no idea it was so difficult.
