Guest Book

One of our gifts at our wedding, 52 years ago, was a guest book. It’s our most treasured book! It was given to us by a treasured teacher, Miss Beth McDonald. She was one of my teachers at Wessington Springs College and again at Spring Arbor College.

We began using our guest book immediately after setting up house keeping in our first home. We’ve been keeping a guest book ever since. The first folks to sign our guest book are gone now. Uncle Harry, Aunt Lizzy, Mom Archer… What a wonderful sight to see their own signatures.

We’ve had children, family, friends, neighbors, students, International friends, missionaries, bishops, pastors, oh, who have I forgotten! We love to look through all our guest books. They bring back such wonderful memories. There are a few, like three or four, times when we’ve forgotten to ask friends to sign. We feel so badly about those and hope those folks will come again so we can get their names in our book!

We’re on book number three or four. We only ask folks to sign once. Is your name in our guest book?

Philipp signing our guest book.

If we make it to Michigan next summer I would love to be invited to come by and sign your guest book!

I was recently at a new friend’s house. A guest book near the front door caught my eye. I wasn’t sure if it was one from their wedding, which would have been nearly 40 years ago, or if it was for those visiting their home. I was going to ask, and got sidetracked. Now I will know to inquire about it when we are over there this weekend.

    • Yes, ask…if they don’t ask you first. Most folks are surprised when we ask them to sign our guest book. Jerry used to tease and say we needed their address so we’d know where to send the house payment bill! He always had a twinkle in his eye so they knew he was teasing!

We used to have a guest book when we were first married. Then life got busy and in the fast lane, and I think we lost track of our book. But such a good idea.

    • Oh, it’s too bad you didn’t keep it up. Being a pastor’s family you’ve probably had some very interesting guests. I know life gets busy. I’m not sure how we managed to keep our going, except determination.
