I have just lost a very good, wonderful friend. I say, lost, because he has just given up his fight with cancer. But he has won the prize! He’s in heaven with Jesus! He was a wonderful Christian man. I’ve known him since Spring Arbor College days. I was a college sophomore and he was high school senior so we didn’t know each other well but that was the beginning of our friendship.
For quite a few years we served on the conference missions committee together. That was a joy. We both marveled and were so excited about what we saw God doing around the world. We both loved sharing this with others.
The last time I saw him was at a funeral for another long time friend who had died of a stroke. Jim and I just happened to sit beside each other at the funeral. Before it started we had a wonderful visit. I never dreamed that would be the last time I’d see him. We talked about the shock of losing this friend and how important it is to be ready… We assured each other of our own personal relationship with Jesus.
Jim and I had a common interest in the world. We both loved to travel. We often exchanged stories of our adventures. He actually made it to all seven continents! Yes, even Antarctica! He beat me! I’ve only been to five.
So I have another friend, that without a doubt, I will see again some day. What a wonderful sense of joy in knowing he is with Jesus. I’ll miss him here on earth, along with all his many friends, but I’ll see him again when I also depart this life and enter my heavenly home.
