Haleigh and Me

Haleigh came over by herself today, no siblings! We don’t get to be alone together very often and we both enjoyed it. Rob, their dad, took the younger kids on a bike ride, so they had fun too.

Here’s what Haleigh and I did together. First we did some sewing on her beautiful new dress for the fall home-coming. We just had to take in the side seams a little bit so it would fit her better. She’s going to be the prettiest girl there, I’m not kidding you!

Then Haleigh and I went upstairs and opened my cedar chest…I still have a formal dress and crenalin slip I wore when I was in school. She put it on…I can’t believe I was that small! She didn’t make fun of it, thank goodness. She was interested in it and how it had a little matching ballerina jacket to wear because it was strapless. Of course we couldn’t wear strapless back then. (I don’t know how to spell crenalin. I’m sure that’s not right.) But do any of my readers remember them? It was back in the middle fifties. They were very very full slips.

I also showed her some clothes my great aunt had saved and I have them now. A hat from the 20’s, her wedding dress, my second cousin’s breeches and knee socks. His first pair of long pants, white shirt (now yellow) and his skinny neck tie. These were his Confirmation clothes as a young teenager, probably about 14 years old. It was fun looking at all these with Haleigh. There were some other things we looked at too in the cedar chest, like some old papers I’ve saved from school, etc.

I hope Haleigh enjoyed this afternoon as much as I did. She seemed too. It was kind of a special afternoon for Haleigh and me.

Thanks Ruth for your comment. No, we talked about taking a picture but decided to wait until homecoming so it’ll be fresh and exciting! All I can tell you is it’s beautiful and she’s beautiful in it. I can’t believe she’s so grown up!
